I'm only an undergraduate student in school, so I'm pretty early in my journey of unlearning internalized racism, (which I believe we all have, but we all need to work on).

I try to think of overly simplistic solutions to complex issues like racism, but your articles have really helped me to be able to implement the solution in the real world.

That being said, I think fashion is one of the most absolutely, obviously racist industries in the United States. It is, literally, all about how you look.
While I'm glad that Vouge featured Michelle Obama in a lovely light, I did notice that all the pictures were captioned with "And she's wearing THIS brand, and her shoes this and that..." Which is rooted in the same system of: "You are what you look like"

If Vouge is interested in any sort of social change, which I doubt they will ever be, they would work on their advertisements and not dodge the real issue of racism their magazine condones by saying, "Isn't a minority on our cover good enough?"

Then again, I've never read an article of Vouge in my life, until the Michelle Obama article. I found it in the table of contents under "fashion and features". I think Michelle Obama has more depth than her fashion taste.

Hi Carmen, is everything all right at racialicious.com? I tried the site and kept getting the message "Error establishing a database connection." Please delete this comment if it's just me!

Thanks and take care,
